Prishtina, October 2nd 2015 – Kosovo Judicial Council Chair, Mr. Enver Peci hosted today a delegation from the Chamber of lawyers from Canton Vaud – Switzerland that is paying an official visit to Kosovo.

During this meeting, the Council Chair, Mr. Peci informed participants on judicial system structure in Kosovo, its functioning, challenges and reforms which this system has passed through.

“Judicial power of Republic of Kosovo is exercised by the courts. The Council as an institution is fully independent in exercising its function. This Council has all together thirteen (13) members. The judiciary, in general, has been having constant reforms immediately after the war aiming to strengthen the system, but, as a challenge for us was the reform of January 2013, but now finally the functionalizing of this power is moving well.

We have a lot of work to do, especially in fighting the corruption and organized crime, which is one of the conditions to meeting the criteria for visa liberalization” cited Mr. Peci

Present was also Director of the Office for Disciplinary Counsel Mr. Zef Prendrecaj, who  spoke about the role and functionalizing of this office and the process of promoting it in Kosovo in order to increasing the accountability of judges and prosecutors.

”Capacity building of this office for the justice system is a contribution as well for the return of the public confidence to justice system, mentioned Prendrecaj.

Chairman of Chamber of lawyers from Canton Vaud, Mr. Elie Elkaim thanked the KJC Chair and other representatives in the meeting and their hospitality, and asserted that the aim of their visit is to see how the judicial system of a new country, as Kosovo, is functioning. Switzerland has a quite good consolidated justice system, pretending to have an excellent system, but we open the road for the youth to keep this consolidation, because in Switzerland they do finish the law faculty of five years, then they spend two years training in the Chamber of lawyers, and then do submit to the bar exam” expressed Mr. Elkaim.

Swiss student – practitioners were interested on many issues, especially for the Office of disciplinary counsel, which was quite important for them.
