KJC part of the online conference “70 years of our convention”

Prishtina, 23.11.2020 – The Kosovo Judicial Council (KJC) Chair, Skender Çoçaj, participated in the International Conference for the 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the beginning of the German Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe with the topic: “70 years of our convention”, which is organized online by the Council of Europe.

During this conference, local and international experts, together with representatives of the local judiciary, discussed the impact of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the last 70 years, the use of ECHR judicial practices by local courts as well as practical measures for the use of these practices by local courts.

Mr. Çoçaj said that in terms of using the practice of the ECHR, it is a challenge for our courts, but it is also of special importance.

“In fact, we can say that in our case law, we have certain cases when the practice of the ECHR is directly applied, although not to a satisfactory extent, but we are optimistic that the number of cases will continuously increase when this practice will be used more in the practice of our courts “, said Çoçaj.

Further, Çoçaj added that in this regard, the Kosovo Judicial Council in cooperation with the Academy of Justice but also with the support of the Council of Europe, has organized ongoing training and legal education for judges, including training modules on the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms on the practical application in local courts of the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

“Also, we are discussing that the trainings for judges should be more focused on the implementation and use of the case law of the ECHR in our courts, for which there will be special trainings in this regard”, said among others Çoçaj.
