Çoçaj: 250,000 convictions have been registered in the central criminal record system

Pristina, 19 November 2019 – The Kosovo Judicial Council Chair, Skender Çoçaj, and the Deputy Head of the EU Office, Riccardo Serri, today visited the Basic Court in Pristina, where they met with President Aferdita Bytyqi. During this visit, the court’s achievements and the importance of making the Central Criminal Records operational for the Kosovo judiciary were discussed.

The Chair -Çoçaj said that about 250 thousand criminal cases have been registered so far, and for this project they have created a task force of sustainability and part of this plan will be a number of procedures.

“Let me greet the EU office for the continued support that, as far as the recorded convictions are concerned, they have reached 250,000. The Basic Court of Pristina is an example for the whole system in the country. The registration of criminal cases will facilitate the work of the judiciary and save time for our citizens”, said among others Çoçaj.

On the other hand, Riccardo Serri, deputy Head of the EU Office in Kosovo, said that the functioning of the Central Criminal Record is very important for the rule of law.

“This project is very important for the work of the judiciary. The rule of law is very important for us and the road to the EU. This project enables citizens to access services more easily, Serri stressed.

The president of the Basic Court in Pristina, Aferdita Bytyqi, said that from this project will benefit the citizens of the country.

“This project will be useful for our country. Up to now 90% of the cases have been registered. This evidence will eliminate any dilemma for every citizen’s past,” said Court president – Bytyqi.

The NCCR is an EU funded project that aims to provide support for the completion of the political, legal and administrative framework and technical structure for the creation and implementation of a central national Criminal Records Registry (NCCR). This will enable a fully functioning register at central and court level and ensure the issuance of credible certificates of conviction by the system in accordance with international standards.
